A Word From The Chair
Greetings Fellow Wilkes County Democrats!
Welcome to the on line presence of the Wilkes County Democratic Party. Of course, the most exciting news in Wilkes County is the visit of our President, Barack Obama, on October 17. It was a stirring event for all Wilkes citizens regardless of political persuasion. For local and active Democrats it was the event of a life time. I appreciate all the help from active Democrats and local, county, and state employees for helping to make the Presidential visit a successful one.
I would like to introduce myself as the chair of the Wilkes County Democratic Party. I am Treva Johnson, and I live in Roaring River with my husband Alan and our 3 children. I was born and raised in Wilkes and am proud to call it home. I want nothing more than to give my children that same opportunity.
It is an honor and privilege for me to work with you and to represent our county party during 2011-13. It is an exciting time to be a Democrat: in 2012, for the first time the Democratic National Convention will be held in North Carolina. So many things are going on at a national, state and county level; it’s hard to keep up! If you haven’t had the chance, I ask that you take a moment to explore our website. We have lots of information here regarding political developments, as well as a calendar of events and meetings that we hope you will find useful.
You may have heard about the Wilkes Policy Committee. I urge you to take a look at the policy issues that committee has addressed. I am proud to also be chair of that committee, and our group is influencing powerful and needed change here in Wilkes County.
Many of us have found that being active in local politics is a wonderful way to engage and contribute to our community as well as to meet wonderful people from all over Wilkes and the state. I invite you to consider where and how you can become engaged. Consider serving on one of our various committees, such as fundraising, messaging, volunteers, and others. If you aren’t interested in serving on a committee, perhaps you can suggest someone who may be willing. Also, don’t forget how important it is to donate to your party. We have an election coming in November 2012, and it is a critical time in our nation, state and local community. Consider how you can join with friends to make a difference at all levels in the 2012 election.
It’s going to take all of us, working together to shape our future. We are ready to stand up and say with one voice, we are Democrats and we are strong! Our county has never been more ready for change then it is right now; we can not hesitate at this chance.
I look forward to seeing you at our next county meeting which occurs regularly the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. As we are in transition regarding a permanent headquarters, check this web page and the local papers for the location of our next meeting.
Thank you for your support!
Treva Johnson,
Chair, Wilkes County Democratic, 2011-2013
